Timely Arrival

We acquired this book in March -- right before the pandemic closure, two months before the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police. Today is our first day back in the building, and we processed this timely book into the computer catalog: Rise Up! The Art of Protest by Jo Rippon, published in collaboration with Amnesty International.

Categories of advocacy and protest topics include Women's Rights; Racism; Peace; Young Activists; Lesbian/Gay LGBTQ Rights; and Environmentalism. A page devoted to Amnesty International concludes the book. The artwork features one or more protest posters accompanying each two-page spread with information about of the artist and occasion.

Pages 26 - 27 feature the now-famous yellow and black BLACK LIVES MATTER logo. A 1968 poster fights racism by proclaiming: "Honor King: End Racism." In 2018, artist Micah Bazant designed a "Protect Kids Not Guns" poster to highlight the need for stricter gun laws.

Rippon, Jo. Rise Up! The Art of Protest. Watertown, MA: Charlesbridge, 2020. 61 pages. Forward; Table of Contents. Recommended for ages 10 - 13.
